Y Gadair Ddu, the ‘Black Chair’

As part of the Cymru’n Cofio – Wales Remembers 1914-18 programme, a 3D printed replica of Y Gadair Ddu, the ‘Black Chair’, will be on display at St Fagans National Museum of History. The original chair was posthumously awarded to the Welsh poet Hedd Wyn, in the 1917 Birkenhead Eisteddfod for his poem ‘Yr Arwr’ (The Hero). Hedd Wyn died on 31 July 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele, and the bardic chair was thereafter kept at the family farmhouse, Yr Ysgwrn, in Trawsfynydd where it has remained for a hundred years. In 2013 a 3D printed replica of this iconic chair was commissioned by the Welsh Government, in partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru, Snowdonia National Park and Cardiff University’s School of Engineering. The chair has toured Wales and Belgium as part of the Cymru’n Cofio – Wales Remembers 1914-18 commemorations.
