Jean Sprackland Poetry Reading Join us on the 23rd February for a wonderful evening of poetry at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery with Jean Sprackland. This will be the final event in our current poetry series; purchase your tickets now! Jean is a poet and writer, she has won many prestigious awards such as the Costa Poetry Award in 2008, and the Portico Prize for Non-Fiction in 2012. Jean’s books have been shortlisted for the Forward Prize, the TS Eliot Prize and the Whitbread Award. She is also Professor of Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University and Chair of the Poetry Archive. Jean is involved with organisations promoting literature and education and is a tutor for The Arvon Foundation. “Jean Sprackland’s poems reinvent the world with a wicked, mischievous magic. Delighting in unsettling narratives and transformations, she turns the familiar landscape of everyday life into something instantly more compelling and mysterious - often anxious and troubling, but always thrilling. There is undeniable beauty at the dark heart of these poems.” - Neil Rollinson Supporting local poet and actor, Robert Harper is the editor of Bare Fiction Magazine. Having completed his MA at Manchester Metropolitan University, he is currently researching a PhD at the University of Birmingham in poetry. His poetry has appeared in many journals and anthologies, he was Highly Commended in the Poetry Book Society Student Poetry Competition 2014. Doors open at 6pm with the poetry reading beginning at 7.30pm. Refreshments available. You will also have the chance to explore the amazing museum galleries prior to the poetry reading, including our NEW Lego Brick History Exhibition. Following the reading there will be an opportunity to purchase Jean Sprackland’s work and have your copy signed. Tickets for this event cost £7.50 If you are a season ticket holder at the Museum, a Friend of Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery or an Art Fund Member, you can purchase a ticket at the reduced rate of £4.50. Although tickets can be purchased on arrival, spaces are limited so it is recommended that you book your place in advance to avoid possible disappointment.
