The Impact of Steam on Modern Civilisation

As part of the BBC’s Civilisations Festival, we’ll be exploring the impact of steam on modern civilisation, particularly the invention of the Newcomen Atmospheric Steam Engine which was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712 and of which we have a replica at Black Country Living Museum. Take part in our family steam trail; meet Mr Newcomen himself in our atmospheric steam engine; find out about the Museum’s rare steam car and get involved in our ‘under pressure’ activity. Plus, at 2pm, Dudley Canal & Tunnel Trust staff will be exploring the origins of the science of geology through a series of 360 virtual reality experiences to places usually inaccessible to visitors deep underground and in our local area. Each digital experience will be followed by a physical exploration of a range of handling objects, including rocks and fossils. Learn the story of the early geologists and how their visits to Dudley's caverns shaped how we understand the world's geological history.
