Moray Society Lecture Series 2017/18: The Health of the Nation: the role of some Moray women before

Helen Leslie MacKenzie, from Dufftown, is the central figure in this talk. Starting as a pupil teacher, she and her husband became important players in early social services in Scotland being particularly involved in the Highlands and Islands Medical Service that was a forerunner of the NHS. Other women referred to are Margaret Stephen, another pupil teacher who became the headmistress of the Elgin Girls' Technical School; Helen Rose of the Rose Nursery and Ella Munro, who became a Queen's Nurse in Fair Isle. All of these women were important in the fight against poverty.
