Niagara through the eyes of a military artist

Felicity Myrone tells the story behind one of the earliest representations of Niagara Falls. Thomas Davies was a captain in the Royal Artillery tasked with surveying the region around the Niagara River. In 1762 he painted 'An East View of the Great Cataract of Niagara, British America', a watercolour which features in our War Paint exhibition. It is the earliest known eyewitness representation of Niagara Falls. Felicity will share Thomas's story and delve further into late 18th-century exploration, science, and military enterprise. Felicity Myrone is Lead Curator of Western Prints and Drawings at the British Library.
