Sussex Modernism

Many of the leading writers, artists, composers, architects and patrons of British Modernism lived in Sussex during key moments of their lives. Led by lecturers in Modernism at the University of Sussex, the course will explore their lives, work, homes and attitudes to the county. This course is part of Sussex Modern, a celebration of Sussex's rich artistic history led by a partnership of nine museums and galleries from across the county. It launched with the exhibition ‘Sussex Modernism' at Two Temple Place, London (28 January - 23 April 2017). Sussex Modernism and Retreat Tues 4 July, 11am–1.30pm For many metropolitan modernists, including the poet William Butler Yeats and Ezra Pound, the Sussex countryside provided welcome solace from Europe's culture capitals. We will examine the impact Sussex had on their work and how these rural retreats revitalised their work. Led by Dr Annabel Haynes. Sussex Modernism and Domesticity Tues 11 July, 11am–1.30pm Looking at the visual art of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant at Charleston Farmhouse and the writing of Virginia Woolf at Monk’s House, we will consider how domestic spaces in Sussex influenced the Bloomsbury Set and other Sussex artists. Led by Justine Shaw. Sussex Surrealism Tues 18 July, 11am–1.30pm Explore the lives, works and legacies of Surrealists in the region, including Edward James, Paul Nash, Edward Burra, Roland Penrose and Lee Miller before moving on to the works of lesser known Surrealist artists and poets. Led by Dr Hope Wolf. Sussex Modernism and Landscape Tues 25 July, 11am–1.30pm Focusing on the works of Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, Duncan Grant, David Jones, Paul Nash, Lee Miller, Roland Penrose and Edward Burra, we will ask how they reinvented the landscape tradition for the 20th century.
