‘How Can Life Go On?’ is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2017. To mark this important week and thought-provoking theme, The Wiener Library will be hosting its fifth Social Media Debate on the language used to describe refugees and migration online.
Our current exhibition, A Bitter Road: Britain and the Refugee Crisis of the 1930s and 1940s challenges our visitors to compare the language used to describe Jewish refugees in the 1930s and 1940s to the ways in which we describe the current refugee crisis. On 24 January 2017 from 3-5pm, our exhibition curators will take to Twitter to foster a debate with a series of questions around the language used to describe refugees and migrants online, with a special focus on Twitter and Instagram. Topics for discussion will include the use of popular hashtags such as #RefugeesWelcome and #HelpRefugees, how best to respond (or not respond) to abusive or inflammatory language online, and the notion of 'the deserving refugee'.
We will be asking our debate questions on our Twitter account @wienerlibrary and providing some examples for each one - everyone is welcome to join the discussion and share their thoughts using the hashtag #WLdebate on Twitter.
