Evening Lecture with Stephen Clews
Thursday 23 February, 7 - 8.30pm
Corinium to Carthage will explore Roman temples and what they tell us about life in the Roman Empire. New ideas about religion and the Gods were one of the great drivers for change in the Roman world, often holding centre stage in the politics of the time. Gloucestershire is well endowed with evidence for Roman and there is some evidence for the worship of deities from distant places. This lecture looks at the local evidence and puts it into the context of Empire, filling in a few gaps along the way, as we build the bigger picture of Religio Romana.
Stephen Clews is manager of the Roman Baths and Temple site in Bath and has been involved in archaeology in the Cotswolds for 35 years, including a few years at the Corinium Museum in the 1980s. He is a trustee of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society and is Treasurer of the Association for the Study and Preservation of Roman Mosaics.
