Keith Kent, Twickenham Stadium, Headgrounds man used to cut his mum and dad’s lawn when he was a boy. He loved sport and, in particular Leicester City football club. When his mum saw an advert in the Leicester Mercury for a trainee groundsman at the club Keith applied. He says he thinks he got the job because of his enthusiasm, he clearly wanted it so much. Keith says that not everyone who loves sport can be a player but there are many roles available which keep you close to the sport you love.
Having trained at Leicester, he applied to become Head Groundsman for Manchester United and was there during a very successful 15 years, when they won many trophies, including the unique treble of the European Cup, the League and the FA Cup (in 1999). He got to know many famous footballers and the renowned Sir Alex Ferguson.
Keith arrived at the RFU in 2002 and has overseen a complete replacement of the Twickenham turf. There are three groundsmen in total and he also oversees and helps the groundsman at the Pennyhill Park team base, where they have a state of the art pitch. Keith says the RFU may one day take on a trainee groundsman and the children visiting to hear his story might one day become one.
