The Attraction of Opposites - Recycling and Fashion

The Museum of Brands, is exhibiting the spectacular dresses from fashion designer and Central Saint Martin graduate Kumiko Tani’s ‘Re-cycle Style’ collection exploring consumer culture, fashion, waste and recycling. It will be on show from the 17th June to 21st August. Tani says that, “An enormous amount of waste is produced every day and recycling is one way to reduce waste. I try to change the image of recycling by suggesting new ways of doing it." Tani’s dress will be located in the Museum’s Branding Hall which provides a fascinating insight into how consumer branding has evolved. The story of fashion is also a component of the Museum’s Time Tunnel that includes the history of package goods, graphic design, promotion, technology, travel, entertainment, magazines and childhood toys. It’s a fascinating experience – visually stimulating and thought provoking. The exhibition forms part of the 2016 InTRANSIT festival from 13th to 22nd June, an arts festival showcasing creative experimentation and new artistic collaborations in places and spaces across Kensington and Chelsea. Taking the festival’s theme of ‘opposites attract’, Tani’s dress aims to inspire conversations around how we can use disposable materials creatively, even beautifully, by exploring the use of packaging in fashion.
