The Italian Cello Schools

The programme includes Sonatas for solo cello and basso continuo which show development and varieties throughout Italian cello schools. Five composers we have chosen are: A pioneer of Bologna cello school, Gabrielli A unique Cardinal Passionei who was also a composer and a cellist A Turin born virtuoso cellist Lanzetti who worked in London and played for Handel A star cellist of the Neapolitan school, Supriani who established new standards in cello technique And of course, the red priest Vivaldi! Programme Sonatas for Violoncello solo and basso continuo Domenico Gabrielli ( 1651 - 1659 ) Antonio Vivaldi ( 1678 - 1741 ) Francesco Geminiani (1687 - 1762) Salvatore Lanzetti ( 1710 - 1780 ) Francesco Supriani ( 1678 - 1753 )
