Maverick and Antiquity

History’s greatest composers have always found great inspiration in musical fashions from the past at a time when this would have made them seem eccentrically archaic. Music lovers have historically clambered for the latest trends and nowhere was this more pronounced than in Mozart’s Vienna. However, fascinated by the work of Bach and Handel he unearthed in Baron van Sweiten’s library, Mozart was inspired to compose this highly unusual and distinctly old-fashioned keyboard suite in homage to a past era. The programme highlights this sadly neglected gem, performed, appropriately on the harpsichord. Programme Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Tocatta in D major BWV 912 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) Sonata in E minor Wq.62/12
