The People’s Galleries

Giles Waterfield will describe the rise of Museums and Art Galleries in the 19th Century in conversation with Ben Gummer. Join Friends in the setting of Ipswich's own 19th Century and Victorian galleries, with refreshments and wine. £10 members, £12 guests, booking required. Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery for more than 15 years, Giles Waterfield has since worked independently researching, curating exhibitions, publishing and teaching. As well as being a successful novelist his work has focussed particularly on the history of arts, architecture, collecting and museums. Currently Director of Royal Collection Studies for the Attingham Trust and an Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute, Mr. Waterfield has long researched the development of regional Museums in the United Kingdom. Over the 19th Century many regional and provincial museums were founded- including Ipswich- principally for the enrichment of the lives and education of local people. The situation in the early 20th Century had changed remarkably from the starting point of 1800 when only one public museum existed- the British Museum.
