In 1916 whilst the Somme Campaign was ongoing, the Battle of the Somme was released and seen by over 20 million people. Audiences flocked to the cinemas for a chance to see actual footage from the battlefront and in the hope of spotting their loved ones. The screening is held in connection with the First World War Centenary Partnership, led by the Imperial War Museums.
This is an opportunity to see this historic film and hear historian Philip Orr speak about the significance of both the Battle of the Somme and the film.
Philip Orr is an acclaimed author and playwright. He has written a number of successful books including, The Road to the Somme and Field of Bones: An Irish Division at Gallipoli. His latest play, ‘Halfway House’, explores the legacy of 1916.
