Book Talk: From Yellow Star to Popstar by Dorit Oliver-Wolff

In this event Dorit Oliver-Wolff will speak about her new book From Yellow Star to Popstar, which tells her incredible life journey from surviving the Second World War to becoming a pop star. Dorit was born in 1936 in Serbia. At the age of five Dorit and her mother escaped from Nazi-occupied Belgrade to Budapest, her mother’s birthplace, where they wore a cross to pass as Christians and frequently moved from place to place. They were eventually betrayed to the Nazis but managed to escape, and spent the last nine months of the war in a cellar of a derelict ruin along with twenty other refugees. Weakened by starvation and disease, Dorit returned with her mother to Yugoslavia only to find out that her father’s entire family was murdered. After the war Dorit lived for a while in Istanbul with her mother and step-father, where she attended a French convent school during the day and a ballet school at night. With her ballet company Dorit toured in Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, performing in clubs where she often had an opportunity to sing with the resident band. In The 1950s Dorit studied English at Munich University and at the same time she continued to sing at clubs at every opportunity. She was subsequently signed by Phillips Fontana Records, which launched her successful career as a singer. She released many top-selling albums and her folk songs in six languages are still being regularly played by German radio stations. Dorit is also an accomplished public speaker and is dedicated to Holocaust education. She gives talks about her experience as a survivor at schools, colleges and other educational institutions.
