Pop-up exhibition: works from Jews and Photography in Britain

Michael Berkowitz will show and explain selected photographs and contemporary printed material that inform his current book, Jews and Photography in Britain. One of the featured objects is a 'kuker'--a fabulously durable photo viewer invented by Manchester's Salman Stemmer. Berkowitz learned that Stemmer was the inventor of the 'kuker' and other pioneering trends in photography from his interview in the Wiener Library's Refugee Voices collection. The exhibition also includes photos from the Weizmann family studios in Vienna, as recalled in the Refugee Voices testimony of Ernst Flesch. Publications edited by Stefan Lorant, and private and published photos of Helmut Gernsheim, and the work of photographers such as Gisele Freund, Gerti Deutsch, Erich Salomon, and Kurt Hutton will be displayed and discussed. Michael Berkowitz is Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of Hebrew & Jewish Studies at University College London. He is editor of Jewish Historical Studies: Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England. His most recent book is Jews and Photography in Britain. His research on photography has been supported by Yad Vashem, the Ceneter for Creative Photography (Tucson, Arizona), and the Ranson Center (Austin, Texas). His previous publications include The Jewish Self-Image and Zionist Culture and West European Jewry before the First World War.
