Evening Lecture with Neil Holbrook
Thursday 17 March, 7-8.30pm
Bodicacia was a Roman lady who lived in Cirencester in the second century AD. She was quite unknown to history until her tombstone was dramatically rediscovered in an archaeological dig in February 2015, some 1,800 years after it was first erected. This talk will examine what we can know, and surmise, about Bodicacia, and the world she would have known in Cirencester and the Cotswolds. Her name is distinctively Celtic, yet she was buried in a very Roman fashion. How might that have come about? And what happened to her grave after she died?
Neil Holbrook is Chief Executive of Cotswold Archaeology. He gained a first class honours degree in archaeology from Newcastle University before working professionally in archaeology, which he has done for over 25 years.
