Lecture Theatre 2.30-4pm
The military and strategic role of Cheshire’s medieval castles, as well as the display of personal power, played a part in the choice of locations, the purposes to which the castles were employed, and the shaping of their landscapes. Their form and siting
were also influenced by each builder’s desire to appropriate pre-Anglo-Norman power centres and ancient locales. This lecture by Dr Rachel Swallow provides a better understanding of the initial purpose of Cheshire’s castles in their contemporary contexts. Organised by Chester Archaeological Society
