Mary Sloane: A Portrait of the Artist

This important exhibition of Leicester born artist Mary Annie Sloane ARE (1867-1961) explores the life and work of a significant Leicester artist. Born into a comfortable middle class life, Mary chose to pursue an artistic path at a time when training opportunities for women were limited. Her energies were directed into her art, campaigns for women’s’ suffrage, travel and a close friendship with May Morris, daughter of William Morris, father of the Arts & Crafts movement. Bringing together many previously unseen artworks from private family collections, the exhibition covers both her early Leicester period and later life in London.
