Sharon Gould performs music that she remembers studying with Rafael Puyana and describes the enlightenment, challenges and idiosyncrasies of lessons with this extraordinary man.
Sharon was one of Rafael’s youngest students, being fortunate to be accepted at the age of twelve into his masterclass at the Dartington Summer School. She then joined his annual summer classes at the Palace of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, and became a private pupil in his beautiful home on the Rue de Grenelle in Paris.
Continuing a major soloist career, Sharon herself became a sought-after teacher and, in full turning of the circle, was honoured to assist Rafael in handing on his principal recital harpsichord to one of her own pupils, Thomas Foster.
She demonstrates his rigorous methods for acquiring finger-independence, agility and a beautiful tone. Stylistic considerations were, at the time, undergoing rapid changes of approach as 20th century style harpsichords gave way to historical copies of Baroque instruments. Rafael’s response to this shift was characteristically perplexing; Sharon outlines how it proved to be an area for heated discussion.
