Joanna and Hilary Bourne: Founders of Ditchling Museum

To celebrate the outstanding foresight and generosity of our founders, Joanna and Hilary Bourne, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft has commissioned a limited-edition silkscreen print by artist Alice Pattullo. Joanna and Hilary, and their elder sister Marjorie, were born in India and first came to Ditchling as children. When their parents returned to India they stayed as boarders at North End House School (later known as Dumbrells). When their mother came back as a widow, she established a home here and the children grew up within Ditchling’s creative environment. The Bournes were close to Edward Johnston and his family Marjorie was one of only two private pupils taught calligraphy by Johnston. Hilary learnt to weave in Palestine and worked for Muriel Rose at The Little Gallery in London. Joanna read French at Oxford University. Later, Joanna and Marjorie taught at North End House School. When they opened the museum in 1985, Joanna and Hilary had already assembled a collection of inherited and bought objects which conveyed a sense of the social changes they had experienced within their lifetime. The sisters helped acquire important works created by the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, and their contemporaries. This part of the collection has grown in strength over the past 30 years.
