Throughout the nineteenth century, foreign peoples were imported to Britain to perform songs, dances and other cultural rites in museums, dance halls and world fairs. These shows were marketed as chances to indulge one’s curiosity whilst seeing scientifically significant human specimens. This talk will explore the historical importance of displayed peoples for understanding race and the emergence of anthropology in the nineteenth century.
With a special introduction by Sir Geoff Palmer.
