Ryhope Engines Museum is based upon the former Ryhope Pumping Station and is a distinctive example of the industrial architecture of mid Victorian times. Its engines show the high standards of mechanical engineering design and construction of that age. Visual appeal had then not been sacrificed entirely to function and there is finely restrained ornamentation on both the building and engines.
The two giant 1868 Wolff Compound beam engines will be working under steam power provided by a hand fired 1908 Lancashire boiler. Additional galleries depict small and large static engines, wooden water pipes, a working water wheel and a working blacksmith's shop. Ask our blacksmith to make you something special as a memento of your day.
Complete your tour with a visit to our popular Gatehouse tearooms for a fine cuppa and a selection of home made cakes and freshly made snacks.
