Heritage Open Days: Smithills Hall

Join us for free entry and tours by the friends of Smithills Hall. At Smithills Hall you can stand in the same room, which is not usually open to the public, where Bolton Protestant Preacher, George Marsh, was interrogated by the owner of the estate, Robert Barton. Marsh was later burned at the stake because of his faith. Legend has it that as George Marsh was being led from the Hall he stamped his foot on the flagstone, leaving a mark that has remained there ever since as a declaration of his steadfast faith.
