Heritage Open Days: Lunt Roman Fort

The Lunt Roman Fort is the archaeological site of a Roman fort, of unknown name, in the Roman province of Britannia AD60 following the Boudiccan rebellion. In the early 1970s some walls of the fort were reconstructed upon the original foundations. The wooden gateway was rebuilt by the Royal Engineers using the same tools and techniques that the military engineers of the Roman Army would have used. One of the fort granaries has been rebuilt as a museum. The fort also contains a gyrus, a circular palisade enclosure probably used for training horses. It is the only one known from the Roman Empire. A newly refurbish Granary building will exhibit about the history of the site with a new interactive exhibition space.
