Heritage Open Days: Maritime and Local History Museum

Formerly an industrial site with a variety of uses (including a velocipede store, workshop and garage), the building now contains a fascinating display of the history of Deal. The Maritime Gallery on the ground floor houses many artefacts from the town’s impressive maritime history including model and full-sized boats. The hazards of the sea and are illustrated by photographs, paintings and written accounts of the Great Storm of 1703. The first floor displays aspects of the local industry and domestic history of the town, with a selection of the museum’s collection of drawings and other artefacts. Special exhibitions in the museum this year cover the history of the local press, the Dunkirk evacuations, the First World War and the Royal Marines.
