Evening Lecture Thursday 15 October -7pm-8.30pm
In AD 9, the Roman Empire covered most of Europe. Forty years of rule under the emperor Augustus had seen widespread military victories and vast expansions in its territories. September of that year saw everything change, however, at a place called the Teutoburg Forest in northern Germany. Three legions were ambushed and massacred there by tribesmen who followed Arminius, a Romanised German. It was a humiliating reverse for Augustus, and a body blow to the empire and its army. Ben Kane’s latest novel, Eagles at War, is about this pivotal moment in Roman history and during his talk, he will recount the dramatic events of that unforgettable summer, describe the battle itself and explain how the aftermath led to a sea change in the empire’s foreign policy.
Ben Kane is well a travelled author and veterinarian who turned his passion for Roman history into a writing career. He is a bestselling author and will showcase his latest release Eagles at War with an optional book signing at the end of the evening.
