Memoria: Memories of Light

This exhibition captures the memories of working life at Armley Mills and presents them in a series of stunning illuminated porcelain sculptures. Positioned within the mill spaces and outbuildings; each sculpture has been created as a specific response to the memories of the families and people who used to work here when it was a textiles mill. They are titled Waves, Aerial, Wing and Gleam and light up dark areas of the building with a soft glow. The inspiration for the sculptures has been drawn from months of research work carried out by the artist David Bridges and a team of volunteers who traced the working history of the mill and tracked down people who used to work there. Their memories, along with newly discovered archives, have now brought Armley Mills’ past back to life through light. This is the first time an experimental contemporary art exhibition has been displayed in Leeds Industrial Museum and it has been made possible through New Expressions 3, an Arts Council England national pathfinder programme which fosters collaboration between contemporary artists and museums. It aims to challenge both partners to bring contemporary art into a historical mill setting and will help highlight areas of the museum that are little-used or currently inaccessible to the public. The exhibition will be accompanied by several talks and tours and two supporting exhibitions: The Making of Memoria - an introduction to the development of the project and David’s artistic practice; and an exhibition by Bradford College students inspired by the project.
