The Indian Sepoy in First World War Culture: Object, Images, Songs. Dr Santanu Das
During 1914-18, hundreds of thousands of South Asian sepoys travelled to different parts of the world to take part in the Great War. Drawing on archival material – trench artefacts, diaries, memoirs, photographs, paintings, and original sound-recordings from POW camps in Germany – Das will try to reconstruct the Indian war experience. How were these sepoys understood and represented and what traces did they leave in the literary, visual and aural culture of the time? How can we recover their emotional world, especially when many were not literate and did not leave us with their diaries and journals?
