Everyone knows about Pompeii – the Roman city, buried by Mount Vesuvius in AD79. But behind the facades of the houses, apartments, taverns, shops and public buildings was another Pompeii. This talk explore the private lives of ordinary Romans – their attitudes to ‘privacy’ itself, to love, sexuality, and sex – and we encounter some surprises. The talk includes some images, which to our eyes might seem very sexual, perhaps shocking, but which were seen very differently by the Romans.
