William Stenson and George Stephenson - the grandfathers of the town of Coalville

The existence of the town of Coalville owes much to William Stenson and George Stephenson who both sank collieries in Whitwick Parish between 1828 and 1832. This talk will focus on Stenson and Stephenson and the developments that they brought about which led to the formation of the embryonic town of Coalville. In particular, it will focus on the partnerships which both men found necessary to raise the capital for their endeavors and the consequences this had on the development of the town throughout the first half of the 19th century.
