Explore the significance of tailoring in the story of British fashion, from the eighteenth century to today. This unique exhibition at Leeds City Museum will celebrate the development of tailoring as a renowned British skill from Savile Row in London to the Leeds tailoring industry. It will showcase its impact on style from tweed and country wear to work clothes and city suits, formal attire and contemporary fashion.
Highlights include a jacket worn by Ringo Starr on loan from the V&A, work by contemporary fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen and items which highlight the important heritage of Leeds tailors such as Montague Burton. We are also delighted to have commissioned a bespoke suit by Kathryn Sargent, a Leeds-born Savile Row tailor which will be made from handwoven wool cloth designed by a young British textile designer.
A programme of workshops, study days and tours will also be available for anyone studying, or with an interest in fashion, textiles and design.
