Edgelands

Edgelands is a free photographic exhibition by Tom Owens, featuring a selection of images exploring the buffer zones where the urban meets the countryside. Tom Owens is fascinated by light, colour and his surroundings, and the official labelling of designated areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) has made him question what is beautiful in the countryside. Since childhood, Owens has been interested in the environments within which he has played, worked and travelled. He finds that morning or evening light transforms dull environments into something beautiful. These places are often only glimpsed as commuters travel in and out of towns. Owens seeks to challenge the notion that an Act of Parliament defines what is outstandingly beautiful. He decided to do this by photographing from outside the boundaries of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB along the Shotley Peninsula. His work evolved to focus on the interfaces between urban and rural environments to the west and north of Ipswich. In a digital age, where we get instant feedback from cameras, taking photographs with a camera that is little different to one used in the late 19th century slows the whole process. Owens has to trust in his measurements and process to expose film with a final image in mind. The initial Edgelands series has been exhibited in Ipswich and London. Owens’ book of the series was shortlisted in the Royal Photographic Society's inaugural Photobook exhibition and was shortlisted from worldwide submissions. Owens was awarded a BA(Hons) Photography from UCS, Ipswich in 2014 and holds an Associate distinction with the Royal Photographic Society. www.tjowens.com
