Hidden behind the plain walls in the interior decoration of courtyards and living rooms in 18th and 19th century private homes in Damascus lie surprises, elaborate stone mosaics, gilded and painted wooden panelling and ceilings, decorative tiles, splendid textiles and other precious items. The refined taste and the complex surface decoration techniques are impressive witnesses of a forgotten urban life style in one of the oldest cities of the world. A number of these objects found their way in to the V&A Collections.
