Henry Vaughan: A Reclusive Collector of Art

In 1899, at the age of 90, unmarried and with no children,Henry Vaughan bequeathed one of the biggest private collections of art toseveral major British public institutions. What isn't common knowledge was that before this bequest wasmade, Henry Vaughan donated his father's small collection of ethnographicartefacts to the Albert Memorial Museum when it opened its doors to the publicin 1868. In the last four decades, this collection has received much academicattention because of its connection to the second and third voyages of CaptainCook. The display tells the story of Henry Vaughan and the journeyof those objects from the exotic South Sea Islands to Exeter. Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Closed Mondays and bank holidays.
