The GPG collection in a nutshell: art photography, photographs from Poland’s former Eastern Borderland, Gdańsk and miscellanea
The Department of Photography has been part of the National Museum in Gdańsk since 1995, when the Museum took over the photography collection accumulated by Stefan Figlarowicz at the Gdańsk Photography Gallery. Since then, four main subject-related collections have been formed, the largest of which is the collection of Gdańsk-related photography. All told, today the collection has over 8000 photographs in various techniques. In recent years, we have been enlarging our Gdańsk-related and art photography collection with the work of international artists. This is made possible by such initiatives as the Mistry of Culture and National Heritage’s programme to develop regional contemporary art collections. In this show, we will provide a brief presentation of selected photographs from our Museum’s collection.

* Design vs Art
This exhibition shows where art turns into product and a product becomes art, and is an opportunity to discuss whether there is a clear agreement and dialogue or rather a conflict and disagreement between the two fields. The exhibits are there to reveal the common planes and the difficulties in classifying design and art.
The exhibition is a joint project by the Institute of Industrial Design at the Koszalin University of Technology and the National Museum in Gdańsk. The preview will take place on 16 May 2015 at 18:00

Open-air multimedia presentation: MUSEUM LOST. Edition 6
Gdańsk, ul. Długi Targ (in front of the Green Gate), 21:30 – 2:00
(one film screening – 30 min.)
This year we will hold the 6th edition of our Museum Lost project with first-night screenings of a new film about Poland’s works of art lost during World War II. Disseminating the image of a lost artwork is the first step to its recovering.
This year’s film tells the story of the places where the Nazi forces that occupied Poland would store Polish works of art and where they would ship them when threatened by military operations. It will focus on the story of Fischhorn Castle in Austria, where plenty of works of art looted from the National Museum in Warsaw were taken after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising.
The main hero of the story is Lt Bohdan Urbanowicz, veteran of the September 1939 Campaign and a painter—graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.
