Nostalgia in the 1960s

The decade is associated with rejection of tradition and an embrace of the brash new world of advertising, synthetic materials, TV, concrete architecture etc. But the other side of the coin is artists (and musicians) feeling empowered to look back to areas of folk culture and social ritual which ‘high’ culture had long ignored. Such nostalgia is relevant to artists like Peter Blake, and photographers such as Diane Arbus and Tony Ray-Jones. Talk by Professor Martin Hammer (University of Kent).
