The Wiener Library is delighted to welcome Miriam E. David, who is a professor of education at University College London's Institute for Education, to speak about her father's family's flight from Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. She will discuss how she and her sisters re-constructed the story from memories and other evidence such as AJR slips, photographs and 'Nazi' passports, which were found long after their parents had died, including the role of the British Consul Smallbone and his deputy Dowden, working in her father's home town of Frankfurt-am-Main. Miriam will also consider the role the British state played in relation to refugees and their relatives in the war period, specifically, internment and how her mother became 'stateless' on marriage to her father in 1941.
The audience will have a chance to ask Miriam questions following her talk. Refreshments will be served from 11.15am.
There is an optional free tour of the Library and archives at 1pm following the end of the talk.
