The Museum of Brands is delighted to present An Evening Talk with Pamela Robinson on Food Adulteration in a Globalised Supply Chain. Controversies over food fraud and food safety are never far away. In January 2013, cases of horsemeat and other "rogue" ingredients were being discovered on the shelves of major supermarkets almost every day in the UK. In July 2014, most supermarket chicken was found to be contaminated with the food poisoning bug campylobacter, according to the UK's Food Standards Agency. Such scandals highlight grave issues around food security and the food industry's competency in the UK. So how can policy makers and lead firms in complex supply chains ensure that the food on our plate is safe to eat? Where does the true responsibility lie in a globalised food supply chain? Are supermarkets responsible for pushing cost pressures down the chain to a level that encourages suppliers to cut corners or act fraudulently? Or, are we, as consumers, to blame for demanding cheap food? These are some of the issues that will be explored in this discussion.
