In the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, join us as we explore the conflict in this series of expert talks. From tales of your ancestors to the stories of nations, discover more about the Great War. Unlock the Secrets of Your Family Military Photos- Neil Storey Mon 17 November, 7pm Discover how details on photographs and postcards taken during the First World War can tell you so much more about your ancestors. Specialist collector and expert Neil Storey encourages the audience to bring their own items along. Edith Cavell: “Patriotism is not enough” Don Chiswell Wed 19 November, 7pm There are numerous places throughout the world with hospitals, car parks, roads – even a mountain – named after Edith Cavell. How did this come about? Why did a nurse from Norfolk become an international icon? And how does the legend compare with history? Peterborough at War: 1914-1918 David Gray Mon 24 November, 7pm Explore Peterborough’s story during World War I from a military and Home Front perspective. Discover the only woman from the city who was killed in the war, the demise of the Bridge Fair and the experiences of a Peterborough soldier during the Christmas Truce of 1914. Britain 1914-1918: A Nation in Arms? Prof Ian Beckett Wed 26 November, 7pm Ian Beckett, Professor of Military History at the University of Kent and author of Home Front 1914-1918: How Britain Survived the Great War will explore the story of Britain at war. Discover how recruitment, conscription, the Volunteer Training Corps and the role of women shaped the country during World War I. The Frederick Frank Story Stephen Perry Wed 10 December, 7pm Hear the fascinating story of Frederick Frank who came to England from Germany in 1871 aged just 15. He served the people of Peterborough his quality pork products for over 30 years before the outbreak of World War I; then the people turned on him and his family with the riot act being read. Landships: The Tank in World War I Stuart Orme Mon 15 December, 7pm Was the tank the wonder weapon of World War I or a propaganda tool? Also revealed, the eclectic and downright Heath-Robinson contraptions invented by many nations, as well as the role Peterborough played in the creation and manufacture of the tank. The First World War in an Hour Dr Sean Lang Wed 17 December, 7pm We’ve all heard of the trenches and going over the top but was there any shape to the First World War? Was there a plan to win it, bring it to an end and save a few lives in the process? Dr Sean Lang, Senior Lecturer in History at Anglia Ruskin University and author of First World War for Dummies will reveal all. Using the personal stories of local people and many rarely seen items from the Museum’s collections, the exhibition looks at the experiences of those who went away to fight, and those who were left on the Home Front.
