God, Money and Offerings

Attitudes to money have been a challenge for Christians through the centuries. In this study day, organised by the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Durham University and the Museum of Cultural History, Oslo University, Dr Giles Gasper, Professor Svein Gullbekk and Rosalind Green will focus on earlier theological and historical approaches to the issues that money raises for us today. Drawing on interdisciplinary research including amazing archaeological finds of money from Norwegian Churches, the implications of donations, made year after year, will be set in the context of differing medieval attitudes towards money held by monastic orders and the market-place. The Middle Ages, no less than the modern, held diverse views on the proper use of money and the place of offerings in church.

Tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring your own lunch or eat in the Undercroft Restaurant. A free event, with donations of £10 welcome on the day.
