Recollections of Imperial Rome in Anglo-Saxon Art

Evening Lecture - Amy Jeffs Thursday 27 November - 7-8.30pm When the Anglo-Saxons first arrived on Britain's shores, legends of the Roman Empire were nourished by encounters with ruined 'works of giants.' At the same time, pockets of Roman cultural legacy still survived among the Britons. Anglo-Saxon kings yearned to step into the line of imperial succession; their goldsmiths drew inspiration from the trappings of the legions. The art, of which the ruling class were patrons, speaks of imperium. Join Amy Jeffs who will explore the Sutton Hoo treasures, alongside the Corinium Museum’s Anglo-Saxon collection and its relationship to the Roman artefacts also housed there. Amy Jeffs graduated from Cambridge with a first degree in History of Art and is currently studying Medieval Art at postgraduate level at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
