Opened in 1850 to serve the growing timber trade, the area the dock covered has many interesting tales, from its use as a heavily fortified citadel to its current incarnation as a popular residential area. The author of the Victoria Dock Heritage Trail, Colin McNicol, will bring to life these stories, events and individuals and show still existing highlights such as the original Hartley Bridge and the Winding House (the tall chimney at the first roundabout).
Admission
Please refer to the Heritage Open Days website for booking details and timings. Dorothy Wordsworth said that the grounds and woodland were “a Childs’ paradise, with ample gardens for them to play” and today they present many opportunities for natural play and adventure. The woods are a haven for red squirrels, birds and other wildlife. Hunt for bugs, play on a rope swing or explore the mystery tunnel. In the house you are welcome to paint a masterpiece in the art room, compose a poem in Wordsworth’s study, or play with games and toys.
