Tut-Mania

When the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun became public knowledge, in late November 1922, it had an immediate impact on the worlds of art, design and popular culture. There had been outbreaks of 'Egyptomania' in the west before - notably during Napolean's invasion and at the opening of the Suez canal - but never before on this scale. This lecture explores the background to 'Tut-mania' and examines its influence on everything from the Chrysler Building and fashion design, to Hollywood epeics and the music-hall.
