During the Miners’ Strike of 1984 a group from London called Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) was set up to support the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). They staged successful fundraising events including The Pits and Perverts Benefit Ball. The NUM did not forget the support of LGSM and they marched shoulder to shoulder with them at Gay Pride in 1985. That same year they also used their block vote to ensure that the rights of gay men and women were recognised for the first time in the Labour Party Manifesto.
Come along and meet some of the original LGSM members and the actors who portray them in the cinematic release of Pride. Pride will be in cinemas on Friday 12 September and stars a host of wonderful British actors including Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Andrew Scott, Paddy Considine, George MacKay and Joseph Gilgun. Cast attending the event to be confirmed.
The museum holds the archive of LGSM and we will be displaying some of the collections during the event.
