How Violent Was the Past: Conflict in Neolithic Britain

How violent was the past? Opinions on this question are often polarised between those who see the first farmers living in a peaceful rural idyll, and those who paint it with a redder brush, seeing prehistoric life as ‘nasty, brutish and short’. Much of this debate, however, has taken place in the absence of hard evidence. This talk will present some of the results of recent research into the most direct line of evidence that exists for violent conflict – the injuries found on the skeletons themselves.
