In this lecture Professor Gary Sheffield will argue that the currently fashionable idea that no one was really to blame, that Europe just sleepwalked into war, is profoundly wrong. Rather, he will posit that the war was caused by conscious decisions taken by the leaders of Germany and Austria-Hungary who ignored peaceful alternatives to settling the crisis in July 1914 in favour of war.
