Commemoration of the Centenary of the Outbreak of the First Wold War

Join us for an evening vigil as we commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. After Evensong, the Cathedral will be open until 11.15pm for those who wish to commemorate this anniversary in their own way. There will be regular moments of prayer and music throughout the evening, with a focus on the Cathedral’s memorials and the Durham Light Infantry Chapel. Candles will be available around the Cathedral for anyone to light. Over the course of the evening, the lights in the Cathedral will be gradually dimmed, reflecting the theme of the lamps going out all over Europe. The vigil will end in almost complete darkness with an act of hope and commitment, prayer and a blessing, and the Paschal Candle will be lit.
