What were the reactions of contemporaries to antisemitic violence in 19th and early 20th century Europe and how did they differ from our perception of pogroms and their history?
This half-day workshop will examine this question through papers from three scholars who have recently published research in related areas. The speakers will include: Professor Manfred Gailus (Technische Universitaet, Berlin), who has published extensively on antisemitism, riots and public violence in early nineteenth-century Germany. Dr Francois Guesnet (University College, London), co-editor of the book 'Russians, Jews and the Pogroms of 1881-1882', and Dr Hugo Service (University of Oxford) who recently published the book 'Germans to Poles: Communism, Nationalism and Ethnic Cleansing after the Second World War' with Cambridge University Press.
