Classical Chinese pipa and guqin

The pipa and qin are the most celebrated Chinese classical instruments which have over 2,000 years of history. The pipa is a fretted lute with 4 strings and came to China from the Silk Road in the 4th or 5th century. It served as a lead instrument in the Tang Court (618-907) ensembles. The guqin or qin (pronounced ‘chin’) is an unfretted zither with 7 strings. Along with chess, painting and calligraphy, qin was one of the Four Arts which Chinese scholars were required to be skilled at. Dr Cheng has published more than a dozen CDs as well as articles on Chinese music. She currently teaches the pipa and guqin and researches Chinese music at SOAS.
